Abstract:

This discussion paper explores the effects of government policies and programs on poverty reduction in Uganda. It highlights the critical role of agricultural productivity in achieving broad-based economic growth and sustainable poverty alleviation. The paper outlines the main causes of poverty in Uganda, evaluates measures implemented to address poverty, and assesses the potential impact of various national economic policies. Special attention is given to analyzing the challenges and prospects of the planned modernization of agriculture as a primary instrument for poverty eradication, as well as examining the poverty implications of external economic shocks. Finally, the study identifies key development issues and strategic priorities required to ensure long-term, sustainable poverty reduction across the country.
